This evening is our book group’s first meeting for 2012. We’ll be discussing Roland Merullo’s Breakfast with Buddha. If you’re curious about how book groups work, please join us, even if you haven’t read the book. Some good things to know about our book group:

You don’t have to like the book. Some of our best discussions are about books we have issues with.

You don’t have to finish the book, though it helps. As long as you don’t mind having the ending given away, come anyway! Sometimes hearing other people’s thoughts gives you the incentive to finish.

Listeners are welcome, everyone participates at their own comfort level.

We serve refreshments.

Tonight we’ll hand out copies of our February book: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, a fascinating nonfiction account of medical research and a family that unknowingly helped millions of people. Author Rebecca Skloot describes it in this video: http://youtu.be/1vow1ePzuqo. Pick up a copy and plan to join us on February 28.

Join us on Tuesday, August 24 at 6 pm for a community potluck and discussion. We’ll use Jean Fritz’s biography of President James Madison, “The Great Little Madison,” as a starting point as we talk about our town’s namesake and why our town’s founders chose to honor this Founding Father when the town was incorporated in 1852. Fritz’s book, a “brisk, highly accessible biography” (Publishers Weekly), is a good read for both children and adults.

Copies of the book are available to borrow at the library, but feel free to come to the potluck discussion whether or not you’ve read the book. Bring a dish to share, we’ll provide cold beverages.

If you haven’t picked up a copy of To Kill a Mockingbird, there are several available at the the library. But whether you read the book this month, or you read it years ago, or haven’t read it yet, everyone is welcome at all of these events.

On Tuesday, March 16 at 7 pm, Attorney Richard Hesse will speak about “Civil Liberties vs. Security” at the library. This is a New Hampshire Humanities Council program. Hesse (J.D., Georgetown University; Professor Emeritus, Franklin Pierce Law Center) will speak about lawyers engaged in unpopular causes, much as Atticus Finch was in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Hesse will link this issue to the present by discussing lawyers involved in questioning provisions of the Patriot Act and other national security efforts.

On Tuesday, March 23 at 12:45 pm, the To Kill a Mockingbird film will be shown at Silver Lake Landing, after the senior dining lunch. Later that evening, at 7 pm, the Madison Library book group will meet to discuss the book at the library. As always at our book group meetings, refreshments will be served.

The Madison Library is one of more than 100 partners working with The Center for the Book at the New Hampshire State Library to bring The Big Read: NH Reads To Kill a Mockingbird to the Granite State during March 2010. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.
