The Madison Library is the recipient of a “rural public libraries” grant from CLiF. The grant provided $2,000 worth of new children’s books for our library.

Duncan MacDougall, founder and Executive Director of CLiF, stopped first at Madison Family Daycare to tell stories and to give them a set of books for their library. The Madison Preschool will also receive a set of books.

Then, the fun moved to the Madison Elementary School, where students listened to Mr. MacDougall as he told stories and introduced some of the 122 books that are now available at the Madison Library to check out and read.

The books brought to the library were donated by Ms. Carol Keenan, in memory of her mother. Each of the 122 books has a CLiF bookplate label that reads “This book has been donated to the Children of Madison, NH in loving memory of Marie Wilkinson. Happy Reading!” We are very thankful for CLiF this Thanksgiving week. Stop in soon and check out some books!

A list of the new books can be read here: CLiF 2011 list

Read’s first novel, “A Field of Darkness,” was nominated for an Edgar Award and she won a Shamus Award from the Private Eye Writers of America for her short story “Hungry Enough.” Definitely not a “cozy” mystery writer, Read’s murder mysteries include pointed social observations and biting wit for readers who appreciate irreverence and dark humor.

This event will begin with a homemade luncheon featuring a variety of summer salads (choices include chicken or shrimp), breads, cookies and a cold beverage. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the library; seating is limited. There will be copies of Cornelia Read’s books available for purchase and signing after the program.

Stop in and see our display of some of the titles that have been challenged over the past few years.

According to the ALA, the most challenged and/or restricted reading materials have been books for children and teens. Challenges are not simply an expression of a point of view; they are also an attempt to remove materials from public use, thereby restricting the access of others. Even if the motivation to ban or challenge a book is well intentioned, the outcome is detrimental. Censorship denies individuals the freedom to choose and think for themselves. For children, decisions about what books to read should be made by the people who know them best—their parents!

The list of books banned or challenged in 2009-2010 contains some that appear on this list every year, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, along with some new to the list this year, including Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenreich and The Bookseller of Kabul by Asne Seierstad. See entire list here.

It must be fall–One Book, One Valley, the Mount Washington Valley’s community read program is back for its fifth year. This year’s title is Go With Me by Castle Freeman, Jr. Book discussions and other programs related to the themes in the story will take place throughout the month of October in locations across the valley. On Thursday, November 4 at 7 pm, author Castle Freeman, Jr. will speak about the book, his writing, answer questions, and sign copies at the Lutheran Church of the Nativity in North Conway.

Check out a copy of Go With Me today at the Madison Library, and plan to join us at our book discussion on Monday, October 25th at 7 pm.
