Wintertime Play Group: Friday mornings at 9 am

Starting this Friday, we’ll be opening the children’s room at 9 am (an hour before library opens) for a Wintertime Play Group for babies, toddlers, parents, and caregivers. Use the children’s room entrance on the left side of the building. If school’s cancelled because of bad weather, so is Play Group. Stop in after dropping off older siblings at school. Story time will start at 10 am on most of the Fridays.

Film Fanatics’ Free Movies: Wednesdays at 1 pm starting January 18.

The Madison Library has purchased a site license to show films! We’re starting off with a series of Oscar winners. Join assistant librarian Leonora to watch and talk about movies and speculate about this year’s Oscar nominees and winners. Bring your own snack or bag lunch. Our license doesn’t allow us to list movie titles on our website, but look for posters around town and at the library, or call us to find out which movie’s playing.

We’re firming up plans for more wintertime events, look for our winter newsletter with all the details soon.

Join us on Tuesday, October 11 at 1 pm at the Silver Lake Landing meeting room to hear author Rosamond van der Linde read excerpts of her new book A Piano In Every Room. This event will take place right after the Gibson Center’s congregate meal at Silver Lake Landing, and is free and open to the public.

Rosamond van der Linde co-founded a music school unlike any other, blending love of music, love of people and a passionate commitment to education, and community service. A Piano in Every Room tells how van der Linde founded, along with her husband, the Sonatina School of Piano in their home in Vermont, living and teaching in a 42-room home with 34 pianos while they raised their five children with love and music. The story is about a dynamic family that created a music enterprise and thrived within it.

For close to forty years the entire family has been involved in teaching piano, building the music school, summer and adult camps all of which have been written up in books, magazines, The New York Times, Forbes Magazine, and profiled on PBS, New England Channel News, and CNN News. This has generated hundreds of questions as to how it all came about and how the van der Lindes did it. This book provides the answers by the founder herself.

Read’s first novel, “A Field of Darkness,” was nominated for an Edgar Award and she won a Shamus Award from the Private Eye Writers of America for her short story “Hungry Enough.” Definitely not a “cozy” mystery writer, Read’s murder mysteries include pointed social observations and biting wit for readers who appreciate irreverence and dark humor.

This event will begin with a homemade luncheon featuring a variety of summer salads (choices include chicken or shrimp), breads, cookies and a cold beverage. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the library; seating is limited. There will be copies of Cornelia Read’s books available for purchase and signing after the program.

We’re happy to see snow for school vacation week. As the storm continues on Monday, the Madison Library will be closed as our town’s road crews work hard to clear roads first, then parking lots like ours once the blizzard is done.

We have two children’s programs lined up for this week:

Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 2 pm: Craft a great thank you: a workshop for children 6 and up. What goes into a good thank you note? Want to make some points with grandparents and other relatives? Hear a funny story that explains it all, then make your own note cards to take home so you can get started writing your thank yous.

Friday, Dec. 31 at 10:30 am: For children 4 to 8 (older children who like to listen to stories are also welcome). Join us for some snowman stories, make a snowman finger puppet. If we have snow, we’ll go outside and make snow lanterns to light up tonight to welcome the new year.

If you got a nook e-reader for Christmas, Bobbi Slossar from the NH State Library has put together easy-to-follow slideshows on how to use your computer to get free e-books for your nook from the library. If you want to see the process in person, the Madison Library will hold a “Checking Out Library e-books” workshop on Tuesday, January 4 at 2pm.

Downloading e-books on a PC for your nook

Downloading e-books on a Mac for your nook

IMPORTANT to know: you will need to put the digits “4393″ ahead of your library card number to make a 7- or 8-digit library card number to use with NH Downloadable Books. See the NH Downloadable Books website for information on what other devices are compatible with library e-books.

We will close at 4 pm on Friday, December 31, and be closed on Saturday, January 1.

Volunteers are needed to lead and teach games; contact Mary Cronin at the Madison Library by Friday, November 12 to volunteer.

National Gaming Day is organized by the American Library Association, which plans this annual event to encourage libraries to bridge generations and explore new literacy models through gaming as players read, learn, and play.
