Friends seeking board members

The Friends of Madison Library (FOML) are seeking a new President and Treasurer. The FOML support your library by raising funds that are used to supplement and enhance library programs. They do this by planning and hosting special events and lectures, by providing a portion of the library’s book budget, and by helping to fund new equipment and furnishings for the library. The annual book sale, held on the first Saturday in August, is organized by the Friends. The FOML are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

The Friends’ executive board meets several times a year, and holds its annual meeting in the spring. The President schedules meetings, develops agendas and leads all meetings. The Treasurer handles FOML finances and reports to the Board and to FOML members at the annual meeting.

The Friends of Madison Library are hosting a topical NH Humanities Council program on Thursday, October 13. R.P. Hale will present “The 2012 Fraud: Misreading the Maya and Their Calendars” in the library’s Chick Room at 7 pm. All are welcome and refreshments will follow the presentation.

Program description:

How many Ends of the World have you lived through so far? The hysteria surrounding 2012 turns out to be the usual fraud and misrepresentation aimed at separating you from your money, and based on falsehoods about the Maya Calendars. Explore the history of the Apocalypse — mankind’s second oldest story — along with what the Maya Calendars are and how they work. Then, take a look at what the frauds and fearmongers say and “debunk” them yourselves. R.P. Hale, of Aztec heritage himself, presents a fully illustrated and participatory program with a surprising conclusion.

R.P. Hale took his BS in Organic Chemistry at the University of Arizona. He is an interdisciplinary artist, craftsman, musician and historian. He is a senior astronomy education staffer with the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord. He is a concert harpsichordist and was recognized by the Smithsonian Institute as one of this country’s top harpsichord makers.

Book and Author luncheon

Join us this Saturday, August 27 at 12:30 pm, for the Friends of Madison Library Book and Author Luncheon with crime novelist Cornelia Read, author of the Madeline Dare series of mysteries. Read’s first novel, “A Field of Darkness,” was nominated for an Edgar Award and she won a Shamus Award from the Private Eye Writers of America for her short story “Hungry Enough.” Definitely not a “cozy” mystery writer, Read’s murder mysteries include pointed social observations and biting wit for readers who appreciate irreverence and dark humor.

This event will begin with a homemade luncheon featuring a variety of summer salads (choices include chicken or shrimp), breads, cookies and a cold beverage. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the library; seating is limited. There will be copies of Cornelia Read’s books available for purchase and signing after the program.

“A World of Fun with Reptiles” coming!

Join us on Wednesday, August 3 at 1 pm at the James Noyes Hall at Madison Elementary School, when Reptiles on the Move traveling zoo will demonstrate more than 24 reptiles from around the world, including Chinese water dragons, blue tongued skinks, and more. This special event, part of our “One World, Many Stories” summer reading program, comes to Madison thanks to a Kids, Books, and the Arts grant made possible by the NH State Library, Byrne Foundation, CHILIS, Cogswell Benevolent Trust, NH Library Association, and local sponsor Friends of Madison Library.

Book and Author Luncheon

Join the Friends of Madison Library for their annual Book & Author luncheon, Saturday, August 27 at 12:30 pm. The Friends will serve a delicious summer luncheon of salads, rolls and breads, followed by cookies and a cold beverage. Then, author Cornelia Read will talk about her Madeline Dare crime series and how her life experiences are reflected in her writing.

Tickets cost $10, and can be purchased at the library. Cornelia Read’s books can be found in print at the library and as ebooks at NH Downloadable Books.

Talk on Ossipee Mountains on Tuesday

Robert Newton, Professor of Geosciences at Smith College for over 30 years, will present a talk on “The Geologic Story of the Ossipee Mountains” on Tuesday, July 12 at 7 pm in the library’s Chick Room. Dr. Newton has taught courses in physical geology, geomorphology, groundwater geology, glacial geology and climate change. An expert on the Ossipee Ring Dike, he has mapped the glacial geology of the Ossipee Quadrangle.

The Friends of Madison Library will host this program, which is free and open to the public.

Plectrum Banjo comedy and music on Thursday

“The Lost Music of the Plectrum Banjo” – The Friends of Madison Library and the Madison Historical Society team up to present a fun program featuring retired professor and banjoist Dean Bennett in the Chick Room at the Madison Library on Thursday, June 16 at 7 pm.

Bennett will take the stage as his alter ego Professor Sebastien P. van der Plunk, entertaining the audience with happy music from the classical, blues, ragtime and jazz traditions along with good clean jokes. Don’t miss out on this chance to learn some musical history and enjoy some laughs with your neighbors.

“Read me a story” chair

The new chair for the children’s room arrived today! Newall’s delivered it first thing this morning, and so far, everyone who’s tried it out says it’s really comfy. The Friends of Madison Library funded the purchase of this chair with donations and proceeds from the Town Meeting bake sale. It’s a “good addition” to the children’s room, according to one parent.

Madison Hand Bell Choir at Friends’ annual meeting, April 28

The Friends of Madison Library are pleased to announce that the Madison Church Hand Bell Choir will be the featured performers at the Friends’ annual meeting on Thursday, April 28. This event will take place at 7 pm at the Madison Church, 53 Conway Road (Route 113) in Madison, NH.

The evening will start with a very brief business meeting of the Friends of Madison Library. Once business is complete, the Madison Church Hand Bell Choir, under the direction of Cathy Marker, will perform a number of pieces demonstrating the history, variety of sounds, and techniques unique to the bell ringing tradition. The Madison Hand Bell Choir plays three octaves of hand bells and has recently added chimes to its repertoire.

The public is cordially invited to attend this entertaining and educational program.

Friends to host food fundraiser at Town Meeting

On Saturday, March 12, Madison voters will gather for Town Meeting at the James Noyes Hall at Madison Elementary School. The Friends of Madison Library is the nonprofit group chosen to hold a food sale fundraiser at this year’s meeting.

Coffee, both regular and decaf, will be available at $1 per cup, free refills with same cup. If you bring your own cup, coffee will still cost $1, but we’ll give you a free bookmark!
Snacks will be priced at $1 per serving.
Cups only will cost 25 cents (we have to purchase these cups, so we can’t give them away).

Funds raised at the sale will go toward the purchase of an oversized upholstered armchair for the library’s Children’s Room, just the right size for a parent and child–or two children–to sit in and share a story.

The Friends of Madison Library are recruiting bakers and others to donate muffins, cookies, donuts, fruit, or some other snack items that can be easily served and neatly eaten. If you can help, call or stop in the library to add your name to the list of helpers. Drop off goodies at the meeting on Saturday, March 12 by 9 am or on Friday afternoon at the library. Thank you!
