The Red Cross urges people to take steps over the next few days as the storm approaches to help ensure their safety and the safety of their loved ones. They include:

Get a three-day supply of water ready for each person (one gallon per person, per day) on hand, along with food that doesn’t require refrigeration, flashlights, a battery-operated radio and a first aid kit.

Be sure you have several days’ supply of any prescriptions you or family members are taking.

Plan routes to emergency shelters and register family members with special needs with local authorities as required.

Make plans for pets. Have extra food on hand, as well as any medications they need on a regular basis.

Bring items inside that can be picked up by the wind.

As the storm nears, turn the refrigerator and freezer to the coldest settings and keep them closed as much as possible so food will last longer if the power goes out.

Fill your vehicle’s gas tank.

If high winds are in the forecast for your area, close windows, doors and hurricane shutters. If hurricane shutters are not an option, close and board up windows and doors with plywood.

We’re happy to see snow for school vacation week. As the storm continues on Monday, the Madison Library will be closed as our town’s road crews work hard to clear roads first, then parking lots like ours once the blizzard is done.

We have two children’s programs lined up for this week:

Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 2 pm: Craft a great thank you: a workshop for children 6 and up. What goes into a good thank you note? Want to make some points with grandparents and other relatives? Hear a funny story that explains it all, then make your own note cards to take home so you can get started writing your thank yous.

Friday, Dec. 31 at 10:30 am: For children 4 to 8 (older children who like to listen to stories are also welcome). Join us for some snowman stories, make a snowman finger puppet. If we have snow, we’ll go outside and make snow lanterns to light up tonight to welcome the new year.

If you got a nook e-reader for Christmas, Bobbi Slossar from the NH State Library has put together easy-to-follow slideshows on how to use your computer to get free e-books for your nook from the library. If you want to see the process in person, the Madison Library will hold a “Checking Out Library e-books” workshop on Tuesday, January 4 at 2pm.

Downloading e-books on a PC for your nook

Downloading e-books on a Mac for your nook

IMPORTANT to know: you will need to put the digits “4393″ ahead of your library card number to make a 7- or 8-digit library card number to use with NH Downloadable Books. See the NH Downloadable Books website for information on what other devices are compatible with library e-books.

We will close at 4 pm on Friday, December 31, and be closed on Saturday, January 1.

Library cardholders will be able to check out the sturdy, tabletop telescope and gaze at the stars and planets from home.

Marc Stowbridge, a member of the Society’s Public Observing Committee, prepared the telescope for public use by attaching the lens caps and filling an accessory bag with a lens cleaning pen, a headlamp equipped with a red bulb (so as not to interfere with night vision), an Audubon guide to the constellations, and a planisphere (circular star chart). A laminated set of easy-to-follow instructions is also attached to the telescope. Using the telescope is similar to using a point and shoot camera: start with the finding scope to point the telescope at a specific object, then look through the lens and focus on the moon, planets, stars, or deep sky objects.

The NH Astronomical Society has sponsored over a dozen telescopes for local libraries. The inspiration behind making telescopes available for the public comes from the Robert Frost poem “The Star-Splitter,” in which Frost quotes local “hugger-mugger” farmer Brad McLaughlin, who burned down his house and spent the insurance money on a telescope:

“The best thing that we’re put here for’s to see;
The strongest thing that’s given us to see with’s
A telescope. Someone in every town
Seems to me owes it to the town to keep one.
In Littleton it may as well be me.”

The NH Astronomical Society (NHAS) is a volunteer nonprofit organization that promotes stargazing and astronomy by sponsoring programs like the popular skywatch held during Madison’s Old Home Week in August. The Madison Library will host a skywatch program on June 10 to introduce the library’s telescope and promote its use. For more information about NHAS and for a list of skywatch programs throughout New Hampshire, visit www.nhastro.com.

The Madison Library’s telescope is in need of a “foster parent,” an adult or teen who is interested in learning from a NHAS member how to maintain the telescope; contact Mary Cronin at the Madison Library at 367-8545 if you are interested in volunteering.
